A La Vera
Label: Capitol Latin
For all the crossover bluster of the title track (and its Spanglish cousin, "Medicine For My Soul"), Guerra cleaves closer to romantic balladry on this album, flexing his lyrical muscles over gentle bachata and salsa and only occasionally breaking into merengue. He's always been a sensitive singer-songwriter in dance musician shoes, and the combo can exhilarate -- dance music with smart, seductive lyrics! -- or spill over into sentimentality. Beware the schmaltzy sax, but don't let it put you off: there's more than enough beauty here to compensate.
