Kaukonen's solo output has never garnered much interest outside of hardcore Jefferson Airplane fans and hairy jam-band dudes. It's a shame, really. Quah, recorded in between Hot Tuna albums, is one of the 1970s' more interesting singer-songwriter efforts. As always, Kaukonen's masterful fingerpicking is the music's centerpiece. Yet tunes like "Flying Clouds" and "Genesis" find him exploring the kind of lush, country-folk balladry typically associated with Gordon Lightfoot and Mickey Newbury.
