Variation 30: Quodlibet
Denk has written at length about Bach recordings, so we know he's both charmed and alarmed by some of Glenn Gould's iconic choices in the Goldbergs. But neither is the pianist one to think of Bach performance as a zone requiring interpretive disarmament. So his middle way is made clear in this take: There's an intensity of articulation that registers throughout, but one that steers clear of constant frenetic effects. And check the stately quality of his Variation 16! Even if you've heard a lot of Goldbergs before, you'll find new glimmers in the music here.
