About James Emery
Best known for his work with String Trio of New York, Emery is a rarity -- an acoustic guitarist operating in present-day jazz. He's played with composers Henry Threadgill and Anthony Braxton, among others. As those associations suggest, he's a deep-thinking, outside-leaning player. His guitar work is percussive but precise, while his writing seamlessly merges elements of blues, Bop, and various threads of avant-garde music, as the particularly strong Standing On A Whale Fishing For Minnows attests.
