Caught in the Briars
Wacky as it may sound, a goodly portion of Ghost on Ghost resembles Loggins & Messina right around the time the duo shifted from beardy country rock to smooth '70s schmooze. Have your deck chair handy, because we're talking stone cold 21st-century yacht rock. With its pedal steel, feathery backing vocals and Sam Beam's shout out to California (the birthplace of this very sound), "The Desert Babbler" really goes for soft-rock gold. Then again, so does "New Mexico's No Breeze" and the way its quiet storm funk makes the mellow cruise down I-25, from Santa Fe to Albuquerque.
