Protecting My Wildlife
Gudrun Gut's Wildlife may be thematically preoccupied with natural states -- thus titles like "Protecting My Wildlife," "Garten" and "Frei Sein" ("Be Free") -- but, musically, she avoids pastoral clichés in favor of a dusky, decidedly urban take on techno pop that reflects her history in Berlin's post-punk and rave scenes. Metal clanks, synths creak and amorphous figures scurry through the shadows, serenaded by Gut's unsettling purr. "How can I move without killing something?" she asks, summing up life in a city where "progress" increasingly hems in possibility.
