Jamgrass acts are rarely described as "brooding," yet once again Greensky Bluegrass have proven themselves exceptions to the rule. In fact, If Sorrows Swim contains their most intense tunes to date. Like a cross between mid-'70s Seldom Scene and "Black Eye"-era Uncle Tupelo, songwriters Dave Bruzza and Paul Hoffman spend a lot of time in conference with the myriads ghosts and demons around them. On "Burn Them" Hoffman touches upon this quality when he sings, "I want to be a bad guy in a silent film.../ I wouldn't have to say nothing or sound mean./ I just wouldn't smile or look too clean."
