Gotan Project's second release plunges deeper into the heart and history of tango, leaving some of the trip-hop trickery behind in favor of fuller orchestration that slides along a razor's edge of sadness and sensuality. At their best, these tracks cut into you, whether it's the keening bandoneon of "Criminal" or the drowsy, faint-hearted (and gorgeous) "Celos." But the group also ventures into new territory, exploring indigenous forms like the drum-heavy candombe and collaborating with emcees on the brilliant "Mi Confesion."
