Glen Hansard of Once and The Frames fame is the most hopeless romantic of hopeless romantics, and his vulnerability is inseparable from his charm. "What are we gonna do if we lose that fire?" he wonders, always cautious of love but never afraid to fall headfirst into it. It doesn't hurt that the guy can howl with the best of them, his vocals conveying his frustrations more than words ever could, like on "Bird of Sorrow," whose climactic cries are heart-splitting at every decibel level. Throughout, soft strings and acoustic guitar provide a centering calm to Hansard's stormy passion.
