Too Real, producer Charlie Yin's third full-length under his prolific Giraffage alias, is a lush, entrancing and stunningly mature fusion of '90s-kissed dance pop and R&B with trap’s gooey, chock-and-screwed vocal tropes and moody haze. Sometimes, the former takes charge: see the shimmering "Slowly," featuring Matosic's airy voice. Other times, the latter carries the bulk of a song's hooks and rhythmic flavor, which is precisely what happens on the otherworldly ballad "Falling Softly." Ultimately though, Yin strikes a delicious balance between the two, especially on the instrumental "Earth," a slyly complex layering of watery, ambient-like chords over seriously thick synth-bass that slithers like a snake. Wonderful stuff.
