Smoke Break (Interlude)
Label: Glorious Dead Recordings
Flatbush Zombies are the energy gods of New York’s “Beast Coast” scene. Erick Arc Elliott, Meechy Darko and Zombie Juice spin unstructured, stream-of-consciousness raps, and mull over familiar stories -- sex, drugs, and the rap life -- with an admirable amount of spiritual angst. Their major-label debut is a hallmark of how Southern idioms have bled into East Coast rap, and when Meechy growls on “Ascension,” he sounds like Khujo from Goodie Mob. But 3001: A Laced Odyssey also sounds like a microphone-passing session, with “Bounce,” “A Spike Lee Joint,” and “R.I.P.C.D.” among the peaks. It’s a good rap album, with no pretentious concepts or commercial taints to weigh it down.
