Label: Blue Note (BLU)
The dark, funky "Walk Us Uptown" that opens this dream collaboration between ?uestlove and Costello, two singular icons, is shockingly not super new: its offhanded keyboard bits and sandy groove recall Soul Coughing. But this is refreshing territory for all involved, from the horn interruptions of the nearly rapped "Refuse to Be Saved" to the buzzing synth-saws all over. The ballads don't show off any soul chops Elvis hasn't already flaunted since covering Sam & Dave back on Get Happy!!, but one of them is an absolute showstopper: Whatever you do, don't miss the floating, lovely "Tripwire."
