The band's murky masterpiece from 1981 lacks the song-after-song knockout of their debut but manages to convey a mood of energy and despair that was distinctly their own. Echo & the Bunnymen sound especially explosive, delivering "A Promise" and "Heaven Up Here" wrapped in a shroud of minor keys and romantic nihilism.
