Clubhouse isn't the finest of Dexter Gordon's 1960s sessions for Blue Note but since they all rank among the best jazz records of that decade that's a bit like a rock fan complaining that Goat's Head Soup isn't the greatest Stones album of the early '70s. Three gritty, propulsive bop originals dominate the set, and while they are very worthy additions to the Gordon cannon, it's the ballads that truly standout (Dex was a far greater interpretive artist than a tunesmith). "Lady Iris B" shows that Gordon was the equal of Stan Getz on ballads, while his tormented crawl through "I'm A Fool to Want You" (Sinatra's doomed plea to Ava Gardner) is essential listening.
