Big Love Hymnal
Label: Todo Mundo
Even back when he was a Talking Head, David Byrne worked as a composer for theatrical pieces, art installations and film. If you've seen the HBO series Big Love (which does for polygamy what Six Feet Under did for funeral homes), you've heard most of these pieces. Not everything here is meant to set the mood or advance the story of the ever-expanding Henrickson clan, but Byrne's mix of Americana, sacred music and movie motifs holds everything together well. "A Conduit to Heaven" and the creepy "Great Desolations" are two standouts, as is the cover of the old standard "Blue Hawaii."
