Church of Rock
Label: Frontiers Records
These Swedish glamsters-come-lately have their poodle-metal moves down pat: reverberating high-register leads like Peter Brady's voice changing, group chorus shouts between verses, meaty but tuneful riffs, pickup lines rhyming "shootin' sparks" with "get you alone in the dark," the works. Beyond a couple rad early Def Lep switches, the four-square structures can get samey. But between phonetic-alphabet hooks, downtown party invites, rock-as-religion metaphors, and good-timey "Cherry Pie" choogling, Lixx get by. Bonus points: Their six-minute closing ballad is dark like Great White – not wimpy.
