Utrillo Kushner has played drums in the monstrously heavy Comets On Fire since 1999, so it makes sense that the sound of his own project is diametrically opposite from the Comets' lysergic-laced eardrum assault. More Bread than Black Sabbath, Acapulco Roughs draws from the early folk works of David Crosby, as well as the baroque pop arrangements and instrumentation of the Left Banke. But there is also a thread of Jim O'Rourke inspired wit in the lyrics that keeps Colossal Yes sounding fresh. Members of Drunk Horse and the Cuts join in, making songs like "The Honeycreeper Smiles" into new soft rock classics.
