I Want to Grow Up
Label: Hardly Art
The title track -- a fuzzed-out anthem to escaping maturity late, whose wry vocals and cocoon of dirty guitar nod to the memory of skewed '90s guitar pop like Juliana Hatfield's -- nails the earnestness you use on your mom, or your loan officer, or yourself. ("I want to grow up/ I really do.") But it's the six-minute minimal groove "Deeper Than Love," pulsing along on a drum machine and Green's little-girl whisper, that's the clearest about why growing up is hard. Verses of loquacious anxiety give way to a stuttered, bleakly festive chorus, like the hook of a muffled club hit.
