C. Chase: Density
Label: New Focus Recordings
After going Euro-modern on her prior release, the flautist now turns to the American scene. She multi-tracks the parts on Steve Reich's "Vermont Counterpoint," plus Philip Glass' early (and rarely heard) "Piece in the Shape of a Square." Alvin Lucier's drone-supported, 24-minute "Almost New York" may look like the experimental heavyweight on the program, but those bragging rights go to Mario Diaz de Leon's "Luciform," which boasts kaleidoscopic, hard-riffing electronics. That this hyperactive background can't outshine Chase's acoustic chops just goes to show what a powerful player she is.
