Returning to Blue Note, this saxophone seeker presents a 75-minute suite played by a killer band that includes pianist Gerald Clayton and drummer Gerald Cleaver. Lloyd announces the album's ambition by kicking off "Flying over the Odra Valley" with the hammered strings of Miklós Lukács's cimbalom. And you can hear a lyra (another odd jazz-combo instrument) early on in "Gardner." Those textures achieve a dreamy union with the pulsing rhythm section and Lloyd's own bluesy soloing. Collectively, the group finds the set's climax during "River." But don't miss the solos on the title track, either!
