Heart Blanche could be scandal-plagued CeeLo Green’s last chance to regain a mass audience, or at least earn redemption. With such high stakes, cranking up the retro pop isn’t enough, no matter how catchy the new wave-y “Est. 1980s” might be. But near the album’s midpoint, CeeLo’s showbiz façade cracks. “CeeLo Green Sings the Blues” is a crying jag where he wails, “Nobody love me no more.” He then composes himself on “Race Against Time” as he admits, “I’m a sinner,” and he strives for much needed catharsis. As flawed a man as he has become, CeeLo can’t help but make compelling art.
