Not unlike T Bone Burnett, who also splits his career between music making and studio production, Brendan Benson is a staunch believer in classic pop-rock songcraft. You Were Right is another solid set of tunes from the Raconteur, who once again shows off his knack for blending British Invasion-inspired hooks and American folk-rock tropes. "Swallow You Whole" exudes a dancehall playfulness belying Benson's love for Village Green-era Kinks; "It's Your Choice," meanwhile, pivots on rootsy, jangly guitars that fanatics of Matthew Sweet, Marshall Crenshaw and Dwight Twilley would surely dig.
