Though Dark Before Dawn marks the beginning of what can be tagged Breaking Benjamin 2.0 (i.e. founding frontman Benjamin Burnley surrounded by a brand new supporting cast), the full-length isn't a radical break from its predecessors. Burnley, who has always been the group's primary songwriter, continues to scrape the murky recesses of his psyche via brooding, slowly simmering post-grunge and alt metal. The novelties that really stand out are the metalcore-inspired grunts and howls littering the record's heaviest cuts, namely "Bury Me Alive," "Close to Heaven" and "Breaking the Silence."
