Best of Bonga
Don't let the sultry grooves or easy acoustics of Bonga's oeuvre fool you. This is an artist who reminds us of what folk music is meant to be: contemplative but thought-provoking, passionate and political -- even when it's danceable. Exiled from Angola for his critique of Portuguese colonialism, Bonga took the opportunity to learn and experiment with other global sounds. This comp weaves bits of morna, fado, soukous, samba, as well as Central American folk music into songs driven by Bonga's mournful melodies and powerfully rugged voice. “Mona Ki Ngi Xica” is a quietly powerful force.
