Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them
Label: Fat Beats Records
This sequel to the 2007 classic Below the Heavens began as demos that, like so many Blu projects, leaked to the Internet. As charming as Exile's early '60s soul loops may be, Blu's disregard for song structure is frustrating. He freestyles on and on (and sometimes sings off-key) without hooks, and he rambles on the same things -- his youth as a churchgoing basketball player and his current life as a wake-and-baker and West Coast indie-rap star. It's an enigmatic performance, with "Maybe One Day" and "The Only One" rising above the chaff.
