She does indeed tell stories: “Church Bells” is “Goodbye Earl”/”Independence Day”-style domestic-violence revenge; “Mexico” is a fugitive tale with blue lights on its tail; in the blow-the-house-down Southern rocker “Smoke Break,” hard-working folks allow themselves a drink or puff to escape it all. “Dirty Laundry” is more spurned-woman vengeance, while “Chaser” is more of a dare. Young women turn into quick-draw outlaws, get mixed up in love triangles, try to live up to dad’s expectations. The singer exercises her powerful pipes over arrangements that lean toward the percussive and spare.
