Thirteen years since Drukqs, it's a shock that there's a new Aphex Twin album at all; that it should sound like this is nothing short of miraculous. Recorded in the past seven years, SYRO is classic Aphex -- a tangle of bumptious breakbeats, mischievous little synth leads, detuned chimes and hallucinatory voices and effects -- but it's also fuller and richer and more spine-tingling than anything he's done since the mid-'90s; cozier, too, cradling a bittersweet core beneath its squirrelly movements. It's classic Aphex sprinkled with pixie dust, in other words -- a masterpiece.
