Alt-J may be both too populist and too strange to be "the new Radiohead," but these Mercury Prize winners have carved out a truly unpredictable space for themselves in the Brit-rock pantheon. Their percussion is skillful and crisp, their vocal harmonies precise and cavernous, and their lyrics completely ridiculous -- sometimes the music is too: "Garden of England" is a quick intermission fit for a Renaissance Faire. Everything from soul horns to Miley Cyrus samples adorn the tunes, poking up from the ether when you crank the volume super loud.
