Is Algebra recovering from a dying love affair, or a five-year hiatus from music? The latter would be an apt metaphor for this neo-soul singer who could have been the next Ledisi if not for major label drama. She has a strong melodic sense, and she garlands her songs with imaginative arrangements that upend urban adult contemporary clichés, like the dusty piano loop that opens "Nobody But You," and the 808 drum beats on "Forever." Not every song works, and she runs out of material before album's end, but "Paper Heart," "Mystery" and "Writer's Block" prove that she's worth a fresh listen.
