The sophisticated New York Blues sound draws from Jump Blues, Swing, Bop, and early R&B. It flowered during the '40s Swing era when such acts as Lionel Hampton's big band featured blues vocalists in front of a strong beat. The shouting Big Joe Turner would influence rock 'n' roll, a few years later. While artists Erskine Hawkins and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson would mix in an accessible blues sound with highly respected and swinging jazz musicianship.
