What's up, world fans? A clutch of great new albums, that's what. Fall and early winter have been dominated by music from around the globe that expertly tweaks tradition. Starting things off with a bang is the fantastic debut from hip young thing Samuel Yirga, who leads Ethiopian music and jazz off on a bold new path together. Then there's Luaka Bop's killer new comp of classics from Tim Maia, the late Brazilian artist who paired thick funk and psychedelic soul with the rolling and swaying vibe of tropicalismo and the heart of acid samba. Also on the list is Chimurenga Reinaissance, the fascinating side project from Shabazz Palaces' Baba Maraire, which fuses thoughtfully fierce rhymes onto bits and pieces of traditional Shona music. Finally, we've got a clutch of great new electro-trad albums from artists including Colombian ñu-cumbia outfit Bomba Esteréo, Sinkane (the percussionist for indie titans like Of Montreal and Yeasayer), and innovative dubstepper Mala.
