Welcome back, jazz fans (and the jazz curious). We've got a great lineup of albums contributing to this month's roundup. We've got some of guitarist Mary Halvorson's aggressive, memorable compositions, from the album Illusionary Sea. And also Robert Glasper's latest R&B fusion collaborations, found on Black Radio 2. Then there are the old and new languages in evidence on trumpeter Amir ElSaffar's Alchemy (which dabbles in ancient musical modes, plus contemporary microtonality). Meanwhile, Cuban pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa's New Day features hot acoustic piano playing (see "Cimarrón") and fusion-like jams (try "Fantasmas en caravana"), both of which sound great next to Glasper's tunes, by the way.
Our playlist also includes tracks from Matthew Shipp's latest solo-piano session, Piano Sutras, in addition to one of Anthony Braxton's most audacious large-format experimentations yet, from his iPod-assisted Echo Echo Mirror House ensemble (see the album review for more details). Great new piano albums from Myra Melford and Kris Davis are also represented, so click play and start listening.
