Terry Date, Studio God

Producer, mixer and engineer Terry Date might not possess the high-profile caché of a Butch Vig or a Rick Rubin, but his stamp on modern hard rock and alternative metal is no less substantial. He got his start in the late '80s, and his first major accomplishment as producer arrived in the form of Pantera's Cowboys from Hell. Released in '90, it is easily one of the best and most influential metal albums of the entire decade. Around the same time, Date also worked with three of Seattle's key grunge founders: Mother Love Bone (Apple), Screaming Trees (Uncle Anesthesia) and Soundgarden (Badmotorfinger, Louder Than Love).

By the early 2000s, following yet another key credit producing White Zombie's Astro Creep: 2000 (released in in '95), Date was busy working with many of nü metal and post-grunge's biggest outfits, including Staind, Incubus, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Korn. But his most fruitful relationship (artistically speaking) was with Deftones. In addition to Adrenaline, Around the Fur and Deftones, he produced the band's pièce de résistance, 2000's White Pony, arguably the most challenging and out-there album he has yet worked on.

For a sampling of Date's most recent productions, check out albums from The Fall of Troy (In the Unlikely Event), Rev Theory (Justice) and Bring Me the Horizon (Sempiternal). Here's a sampling of his best stuff.
