Mosi Reeves' Top 50 Tracks of 2013

About this playlist

If my top 50 tracks this year reveal anything about me, it's that I should listen to a wider variety of music! It's tough enough keeping up with the regional trends, stylistic shifts, out-of-nowhere mixtape memes and superstar albums that define modern rap. Add to that an increasingly stuffed plate of funk, neo-soul, urban pop and mixtape-mediated indie R&B, not to mention the alternative R&B floating out of certain corners of electronic music. As a result, I spent nearly all of my listening hours trying to assess two popular music genres. The rest of the time was used salving my poor ears with glitch-y instrumental beats and the occasional house and techno number.

I guess trying to listen to indie rock -- which, believe it or not, I used to do quite a bit of several years ago -- would be too jarring. I used to listen to jazz and reggae, too, and I've made copious lists of the various classical composers I'd like to check out someday. I generally don't do country, but there are a few singers I'm curious about, like Johnny Cash (naturally) and Crystal Gayle. Surely I'll enjoy this playlist of my sundry favorites as I prepare for another year of rap and B.S. (Sorry, just kidding.) I have a few New Year's resolutions, though, and one of them is to explore a wider variety of music in the future. Happy holidays everyone, and I hope your 2014 is even better than this year.
