Hot Rap Singles, April 2013

About this playlist

Our latest collection of new rap joints finds the genre picking up steam. Drake's "Started from the Bottom" is already one of the most memorable tracks of the year. Future's "Karate Chop" sparked controversy, too, but for less noble reasons: It originally included a line from Lil Wayne that maligned Civil Rights martyr Emmett Till. (That line isn't on this version.) Birdman's forever-delayed album is now being refashioned into the all-star collective Rich Gang, and the first singles from that project are "Tapout" and "Fly Rich." Kid Cudi continues to build steam toward next month's Indicud with "Immortal," and Tyga preps for next month's Eagles-inspired Hotel California with "Molly."

In the album TBD category we have 50 Cent ("We Up"), Juicy J ("One of Those Nights"), Earl Sweatshirt ("Whoa"), French Montana ("Freaks"), J. Cole ("Power Trip"), and Rick Ross ("Box Chevy"). For new major-label prospects, we've got Canadian rap veteran Classified ("Inner Ninja"), ATL group Slice 9 ("Another One"), Baton Rouge rapper Kevin Gates ("Satellites"), and Young L, the rapper/producer behind The Pack's "Vans" ("Atari"). Speaking of the latter, we've also got West Coast swag/ratchet stars TYDOLLA$IGN ("My Cabana") and Y.G. ("You Broke"). There are 45 tracks and over two hours of music, so dig in.
