About this playlist

A good DJ mix should take you somewhere. That sort of music-as-spiritual-journey conceit may be a cliché, but who wants to simply march in place while the DJ goes through the motions? You want a smooth ride, but the twists and turns are part of what you sign up for. With that in mind, I've put together this playlist like an opening DJ's set, starting off slow and contemplative and gradually building steam.

The Mickey Moonlight remix of Sandro Perri's balmy "Love & Light" (released on DFA) kicks things off with sundowny vibes, which carry through songs from Mala, Teengirl Fantasy, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and others. Simian Mobile Disco, FaltyDL and D'Marc Cantu apply gradual pressure as the subwoofers heat up and the chords kick in. KiNK, Disclosure and DJ Sneak take us into deep-house prime time, and Alden Tyrell, Skudge and Mickey Pearce tip us into full-bore techno and bass-music terrain. After the retro U.K. garage sounds of Buzzin10's "String Ting," mystery artist Rrose sends us off with a lysergic take on classic minimal techno. Where you go from there is up to you: Might we suggest any of the doorways in Napster's Dance-Music Spectacular?
