Get Up With: Linda Oh's Bass

About this playlist

When Malaysian-born, Australian-raised bassist Linda Oh released her first album, Entry, back in 2009, she had to put it out herself. But any dismissive notions listeners might have had regarding self-promotion were immediately blown apart by powerful cuts like "Gunners" and Oh's own bass solos on tracks like "Fourth Limb." Her music demanded to be heard, and pretty quickly it was. (It also helped that she had a crack band on her first outing, including rising trumpet star Ambrose Akinmusire.)

She didn't have to self-release her music for long. Trumpet eminence Dave Douglas quickly put Oh in some of his own bands, and then began distributing her music under his own Greenleaf Music imprint, starting with 2011's Initial Here, on which she brought more great originals -- plus insights into composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Leonard Bernstein (on the mashup track "Something's Coming / Les Cinq Doigts"). Once again, she had great partners in the lineup, like saxophonist Dayna Stephens.

Now Oh has released her third strong album as a bandleader. Titled Sun Pictures, it's perfectly timed for the last gasps of long-shadow summer afternoons. (And it has another great lineup, too.) See the appended playlist for highlights from Oh's works so far.
