Fania All-Stars

About this playlist

Today, it may be a bit difficult to imagine salsa as anything but a quintessential Latin sound that’s made generations of listeners dance all around the world. But some 40 years ago, salsa was a nascent local phenomenon championed by New York City's deeply rooted Puerto Rican community and immigrants from Latin America. Fusing Spanish Caribbean roots music with lyrics about love, street life and cultural pride, this music was the soundtrack to the New York Latino experience in the late '60s and '70s. And Fania Records, with its eponymous supergroup roster of All Stars, boasted the premier players. Consider this playlist a two-hour starter kit for Fania’s rich catalog and salsa’s early days.
