Beat Throwback: Diwali Riddim

About this playlist

Even if you don't recognize the name, you'll recognize this shuffle-stomping, handclap-happy beat that peppered every inch of dancehall -- and quite a lot of mainstream pop -- in the early 2000s. Called "Diwali riddim" for its Indian-Caribbean influence, it's credited to Jamaican producer Steven "Lenky" Marsden. But like most Jamaican riddims, it was passed around until just about every major dancehall artist of the day had gotten a hit off it -- not to mention all the crossover songs that feature it, from Sean Paul's "Get Busy" to Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" to Lumidee's "Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh)." So get ready to party like it's 2002 and shake. that. thing.
