Artist Spotlight: Kendrick Lamar's 2013

About this playlist

At the start of 2013, magazines were proclaiming Kendrick Lamar the newest "best rapper alive," and he was well on his way to going platinum with good kid, m.A.A.d. city. He became one of rap's cameo kings, the kind of voice you hear on every song on the radio, whether it's his own singles such as "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe," or A$AP Rocky's "F*ck*n' Problems." Then there was #TheVerse, a moment of thrilling provocation that only amplified his omnipresence. (I don't have to tell you which song it was, right?) Now, as 2013 draws to a close, it's clear that there's no one else who had a bigger impact on the year in rap, save for maybe Kanye West (which was for entirely different reasons). It's difficult to imagine how Kendrick Lamar will top this.
