Change may well become them, but three and a half decades after inventing indie rock, Wire remain their detached and abstract selves, treating songs like acrostics -- and they still sound more like Wire than, say, Iceage or Parquet Courts ever will. Tempos on this more-guitar-than-synth 2013 album generally stay slowish, varied by dub rhythm ("Magic Bullet"), drowsy instrumental spans ("& Much Besides") and blastoffs ("Attractive Space"). Even the pogo speedups fade away quick. "Eels Sang," though, stands out thanks to constricted Gang of Four funk and words that seem to mention Simon Cowell.
