Tom Waits was a pup of 21 when he made these demons in 1971, recorded two years before he cut Closing Time and released 20 years later. Though a handful of these songs -- including "Ice Cream Man," "Midnight Lullabye" and "Virginia Ave." -- were eventually rerecorded and released, the overall quality of the sessions (and Waits' youthful performance) pales compared to the standard of Closing Time, and this recording is best left for diehards hungry for the underripe fruits of his genius.
