The Men are feral Brooklyn garage-rockers increasingly torn between the psychedelic mosh-pit ragers they initially favored (see "The Brass") and the gentle, country-fried stuff they've taken to since (see "High and Lonesome," which takes its title very seriously). New Moon excels at both: It can open with a piano-and-acoustic lope called "Open the Door" and close with a crazed, electrifying mega-jam called "Supermoon." What's in between ranges from slightly crunchier Big Star to slightly calmer Stooges: Dig especially "Without a Face," a fabulous, chugging slice of American Krautrock.
