With The Cave Singers there is never a shortage of foot-stompin' to be had. Even when they bring in producer Randall Dunn, an experienced hand in muddy dirge rock (Black Mountain, Boris), the Seattle rockers never lose that folky charm -- it's just a little dirtier. Vocalist Pete Quirk sounds like he's been gargling woodchips as the trio rocks and rollicks like the Stones down South, and experiments like George Harrison hanging in India ("Outer Realms"). That a lush acoustic ballad ("Distant Sures") can stand so well next to murky psych-rock ("Faze Wave") is even more testament to their range.
