Released:
Label: Victory
This Floridian death metal band's fifth album starts out not unlike At the Gates' seminal Slaughter of the Soul, with tellingly abrasive noises before breaking into all-out heaviness. It's a good sign, as The Autumn Offering have been guilty of the sin of "too much melody" in the past, and even here, frontman Matt McChesney occasionally falls into singer mode. But drummer Brian Sculley is downright awesome, and songs "Synapse" and "Exhale the Locusts" absolve the veteran quintet.
