Released:
Label: Capitol Records
Miller goes for his grandest ("Good Morning," "Never Kill Another Man") and kitschiest ("Hot Chili") arrangements on his numbskullfully-titled fifth album. Indulging in stoner country and Tex Mex boogie -- both engaged more skillfully elsewhere by other artists -- Miller delivers a fun if lightweight record. Until its finale, that is; the last trio of songs finds Miller trying to make some rather awkward political statements. An uneven bridge between Miller's early, blues-based phase and his later pop ascension, Number 5 never surpasses the jubilant, psychedelic pomp of its opening number.
