After the success of El Baile Aleman, a collection of Kraftwerk covers in Latin big-band styles, Senor Coconut applies his technique to an even broader repertoire. Songs like Sade's "Smooth Operator," Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" are rendered in styles like merengue, guagango and mambo cha-cha-cha; this time, however, Coconut (the German-born, Chile-based producer Uwe Schmidt) moves beyond sampling vinyl, as Schmidt conducts his own big band, re-editing the results into a post-modern pop hybrid.
