Label: Rhino Atlantic
On Bar Chord Ritual, originally released in 1996, Rust come off like classic rockers who fell in love with 1990s alternative rock and punk. The fuzzy guitars are a nice cross between Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Vocalist John Brinton comes from the Perry Farrell school of venomous screech. More angry than dejected, he wallows in standard slacker fare: dropping out, rules totally suck, and let's go through the motions because there's nothing better to do. The production is rather thin, which is a shame considering Rust possessed more verve and intensity than, say, Silverchair or Candlebox.
