Roc Marciano has been on the rap scene for over a decade, first as an affiliate of Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Squad, then as part of Pete Rock-mentored thug rappers the UN. Few would have guessed he had an album like Marcberg in him. His principal feat — applying crusty funk loops to hard-nosed crime tales and weaving snippets from '70s pimpsploitation film The Mack — has been done often, and better. That doesn't make it any less compelling. On "Whateva Whateva," "We Do It" and other tracks, Marciano takes it back to the '90s, an era when New York thuggin' was at its creative peak.
