Papi Sanchez hit just as urban bachata and reggaeton were taking over the airwaves. But this mixer of tropical rhythms and hip-hop took a different tack, spitting rhymes over the stomping swagger of merengue. By his fourth album, Sanchez had locked that sound down: He toys with bits of salsa, house, hollowed-out old-school beats, even a little reggaeton (the hit “Unete Al Baile”). But most of Made follows the agenda laid out in “Mi Merengue”: assemble a classic tropical cocktail of (synth) horns, tinny guitars and hip-swiveling march beats and top it off with serious hip-hop flow.
